Compositional and Morphological Comparison among Three Coeval Violins Made by Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù” in 1734

In the present work, we had opportunity to study coating systems of three different coeval violins, namely “Spagnoletti”, “Stauffer”, and “Principe Doria”, made by Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù” in 1734. These violins were non-invasively investigated reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy X-ray fluorescence. two techniques combined for first time with a 3D laser scanner. The analytical campaign enabled characterization materials their distribution within stratigraphy, mainly composed varnish and, when present, proteinaceous ground coat. Some restoration also identified, suggesting application maintenance treatments undertaken during history. preliminary information about morphological geometrical differences between acquired through scanner order observe similarities design features among violins.
